The owner of this home in Kommetjie, Western Cape, is delighted that she can keep her veranda doors open when the wind blows, as long as the Trellidor Clear Guard screens are closed.

‘Going green’ is not necessarily just about saving electricity and reducing waste.  It can also be about doing no harm to our wildlife.  Trellidor Clear Guard mesh screens do just that, keeping the local fauna at bay while allowing us to enjoy the reason why we bought into an eco-estate in the first place.

These unique door and window screens are made from a high tensile stainless steel mesh that allows clear views of the indigenous surroundings on the estate.  Although primarily designed to keep out opportunistic thieves, they’re also highly effective in keeping out foraging monkeys or baboons.

“It’s a humane way of controlling this problem and ideal for any area where these primates are a pest, not just eco-estates,” said Nick Sacco, Trellidor Business Development Manager.

Wetland wildlife

Many eco-estates have marshy wetlands that foster both plant life as well as the creatures that are part of a healthy eco-system.  This brings with it frogs and snakes that may wander into nearby homes as they go about their natural business.  Closed Trellidor Clear Guard screens keep them outside without the human inhabitants having to forgo fresh air and the wonderful bird song and other sounds that are part of this environment.

“Doors and windows can be left open as long as our screens are closed, so residents can enjoy the outdoors without letting it inside,” said Nick.

The mesh screens are custom manufactured to fit any style of door or window, so are ideal for verandas with sliding or folding doors; outside bomas or pubs; diningrooms or lounges that open up to the outdoors; and bedrooms opening onto verandas.

Some parts of South Africa are plagued by midges or miggies at sunset and the screens can be used very effectively to avoid being swamped by them.  “We can hide the screens inside a wall recess during the day if they’re not needed, and slide them out in the evening so that sundowners on the veranda are not spoilt by buzzing insects,” said Nick.

Mosquitoes are also a problem in many parts of the country, not just wetlands, and are particularly worrisome in malaria areas.  Trellidor Clear Guard screens are very useful here, because if kept closed at all times, mosquitoes can’t get through the mesh.  Used in conjunction with other anti-mosquito methods, they can help curb this annoying and sometimes deadly pest.

Working with the elements

Coping with high summer temperatures can be a problem for people concerned about the environment in a ‘green’ sense.  Running air conditioners and electric fans at full tilt just doesn’t seem right and isn’t cost effective either.

If fitted to all doors and windows in a room, Trellidor Clear Guard screens can reduce internal temperatures by up to three percent, which is considerable, especially in areas where temperatures can soar above 35°C.  The screens allow homeowners to lower their use of air conditioners and fans.

Another spin-off is that the mesh helps diminish the harsh effects of the sun’s UV rays by as much as 60 percent, reducing premature fading (and replacement) of furniture, carpets, curtains and blinds.

Coastal eco-estate dwellers may welcome high winds when they arrive to cool everyone down after a hot day, but they can also prevent one from enjoying the outdoors.   Wind tunnel tests have shown that Trellidor Clear Guard screens provide up to a 40% reduction in the effect of wind and also stop beach sand and dust from blowing indoors.

“Closed screens allow windows and doors to be left open, so no matter what type of eco-estate you live on – coastal, inland, or game lodge – you can make the most of your wonderful, natural environment,” said Nick.
